Core Values

Aims and Objectives

Horizons aim to provide high-level care across all seven of our care homes. We believe in taking a playful and loving approach with our children and young people in order to encourage acceptance, curiosity and empathy. Horizons ethos and practice is underpinned by social pedagogy. This means that Horizons takes a holistic approach which encourages positive relationships to be built when working with looked after children.

We also follow SHANARRI wellbeing indicators to ensure the wellbeing of our children and young persons. These include our young person’s feelings: Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible and Included.

Horizons Objectives:

  • Create a safe and welcoming environment that is in line with the needs of each young person that joins our homes.
  • Provide the highest quality care and support achievable to each of our young persons.
  • Safeguard our young people and promote their welfare by providing health education and positive healthcare practice.
  • Encourage safe integration of our young persons into the community by promoting diversity, respect, values, self-confidence, and self-esteem.
  • Provide a multi-disciplinary service with our diversely qualified team who ensure the best interests of the young persons and families are being fulfilled.
  • Support young people to achieve their full potential by promoting equality of opportunity to encourage our young people to grow and develop.
  • Encourage relationships with the families of the young people unless it is explicitly clear that this would not be of benefit to them.
  • Prepare our young people to be independent so they may lead a self-sufficient
    and fulfilling adult life.

We ensure our employees are well familiar with these objectives as we base their development goals on the objectives listed.

How do we maintain our high level of care?

Horizons main aim is to provide Young Persons with a high level of care that meets their needs and welcomes feedback for improvement. In order to improve the quality of our service we have several ways of hearing what are the views of our service users:

  • A review of an evaluation form for young people when they leave our care,
  • A brief questionnaire annually of how young people view their care and suggestions for improvement,
  • An evaluation questionnaire for families and carers
  • A brief questionnaire for professionals on the service we provide, and ideas welcomed on how we could improve,
  • A suggestion box,
  • A suggestion box marked confidential for the manager’s sight only,
  • Young people’s meetings, chaired by the Who Cares worker,
  • Information booklet,
  • An internal complaints procedure
  • The option to speak to staff, manager and service manager if required,
  • The option to speak to the Care Inspectorate,
  • Access to support from the ‘Who cares’ representative,
  • In some cases, access to Local Authority Children’s Rights Service.
